Fort King Heritage Foundation

The mission of the Fort King Heritage Foundation is to preserve, protect and promote the Fort King National Landmark in Ocala, Florida, while serving as a citizen support group to cultivate and sustain a public private partnership to protect and develop important cultural, historic and natural resources found at the park for future generations.

The Festival of Fort King, a two-day event on December 6th and 7th, offers a reenactment of the start of the Second Seminole War. Artists, crafters and tradespeople are present to depict life in 19th Century Florida. The ninth annual festival, which will not charge admission for the second year in a row, features a reenactment of the battle between U.S. military personnel and the Seminole Nation, while offering historical information about the culture and heritage of early settlers and the Indigenous people of Florida. On Friday, December 5, more than 1,200 students from Marion County schools will visit the fort for a field trip with exhibitors and reenactors on site. The group will include mostly 3rd and 8th graders who are studying Florida history in their classes. It is hoped that students from the Dunnellon area will also attend, and invitations will be made to schools in Levy, Citrus and Alachua counties. The support of Big Lick Gives will provide organizers with assistance to cover the stipends paid to artists, crafters, exhibitors, demonstrators and reenactors throughout the three days of the event.

The committee at Big Lick Gives was pleased to donate towards this organization.
